From April 2023, the CMLS Board are no longer accepting applications for certification directly.  Instead, professional bodies operating CMLS approved CPD schemes will be able to issue certification on behalf of the Council for their members meeting the criteria.

Current certificants will maintain their certification until their renewal is due.  At that time, they will need to contact their professional body operating their CPD scheme for details on how to provide the revised competency declaration and, provided their CPD records are valid, the professional body will issue their certification renewal and notify CMLS to update their entry on the register.

Those individuals who are not members of any of the professional bodies offering CPD recording and verification are strongly encouraged to join their relevant association but may opt to record their CPD via AIMS APACE as a non-member- see https://www.aims.org.au/apace.  AIMS will issue certification for those meeting the requirements.

We always knew our name was a bit of a mouthful and so it seems was our acronym.

In response to feedback we are pleased to re-launch with our new URL cmls.org.au.  The official company name remains but the acronym reflects our core business of Certification of Med Lab Scientists and your entry on the register remains a guarantee you are qualified, competent and certified.

Going forward, new certificants will have their certificates showing the new name but current certificants will be issued with a revised certificate on renewal.

You can contact us on office@cmls.org.au although the previous email address and web address will continue to work for a period.

The ACCMLSW Board are pleased to announce the addition of a new category of certification for those meeting the NPAAC requirements of a Clinical Scientist.  Applicants will need to provide evidence of their qualification and CPD with no option for Provisional Certification for this category.

Medical Scientists who are already on the Register of Certified Medical Laboratory Scientists may apply to upgrade their status by contacting the acting registrar office@accmlsw.org.au with evidence of their qualification.  If the application is accepted their certificate and entry on the Register will be updated for the remainder of their current certification at no charge.

Certified Clinical Scientists will be entitled to use the post nominal CCS.

he ACCMLSW Board have recognised that recording of continuing professional development activities (CPD) is something medical laboratory staff have not been required to do in the past and as a result, a number of people wishing to apply for certification are unable to provide the records to meet the CPD requirements for full certification.

In addition, staff who leave the workforce for a period may not have the opportunity to continue CPD and will again fall short of the requirement for certification upon returning to the profession.

To address this, the Board have initiated a new status of Provisional Certification.  Like the Conditional Certification for new graduates, there is no need to meet the CPD requirement to apply, however the remaining minimum standards of experience, demonstrated competency and qualifications must be met at the time of application.  Those applying for provisional certification need to commit to completing the minimum CPD over the period of their provisional certification to progress to full certification.  There will be no option to extend provisional certification beyond one 2 year cycle.

Previous fully certified practitioners who have taken a career break would also be provisionally certified upon their return to work until they are able to demonstrate they have met the CPD requirements.

The professional bodies who make up the ACCMLSW are committed to meeting the needs of the medical laboratory workforce and employers whilst maintaining the standards expected of a certification scheme.
